While you might learn some coordination it can’t really be translated to the guitar. That’s why as a guitar teacher I am excited to see the You Rock Guitar which has 6 strings (where you pick) and actual frets that pick up where your fingers are.

While it can be used for the usual video games, I’m thinking it can be used as a transition to learn guitar as well, and it isn’t as difficult as a normal guitar as there are no strings to fret. Plus it’s got some cool sounds and backing tracks and you can use headphones. Here’s a video:
